Christmas present for the economy

The Government’s decision not to impose carbon taxes is a great Christmas present for the economy, says Business NZ.

“The decision demonstrates that Government has been listening to business, and we congratulate them for that,” said Business NZ Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly.

“It is also important to acknowledge the supply and agreement negotiations undertaken by United Future and NZ First specifying a review of the carbon tax policy.

“Imposing carbon taxes wouldn’t have worked. It would have made fuel costs higher for everyone, and would have penalised enterprises that in most instances have to increase energy use to grow their business.

“Business supports the move away from carbon taxes and is looking forward to working with Government to find a solution - other than taxes or a carbon trading regime that would both harm the economy - to reduce greenhouse emissions while keeping businesses competitive.”
