Tertiary proposals good for industry training

The Tertiary Education Advisory Commission’s report on tertiary funding gets the thumbs-up from Business New Zealand for its focus on work-based learning and quality.

“The Commission has recognised that work-based learning has to move to centre-stage if we are to lift the skill levels of our existing workforce in order to boost growth,” says Business New Zealand Chief Executive Simon Carlaw.

“We support the Commission’s recommendations for a single funding system for all post-compulsory education and training – it means that industry and pre-employment training will no longer be treated as poor cousins.

“The focus on quality and performance in the area of research funding is also welcome.  We are not a wealthy country, and our investment in research at our tertiary institutions has to be related to results”.
