BusinessNZ has welcomed Government proposals to broaden the range of learning options for young people.
The Education Minister today announced new vocational pathways for the Youth Guarantee Scheme.
The Youth Guarantee Scheme allows 16 and 17 year to study towards their NCEA in both schools and tertiary organisations.
Using the flexibility of the NCEA, some students mix school and tertiary learning while others study full time in tertiary organisations.
The new pathways announced today are in manufacturing and technology, construction and infrastructure, primary industries, social and community services and service industries.
BusinessNZ Chief Executive Phil O'Reilly says vocational education is vital for addressing New Zealand’s employment and skills challenges.
“Vocational education gives young people the skills required to succeed in the labour market, while driving productivity and supporting the international competitiveness of businesses.
“It is essential that the business community, tertiary providers and schools work together to define these pathways to achieve the most productive results.
“Broadening the options available for young people also means we must improve the quality of careers advice available,” Mr O’Reilly said.
“We urge the Government to work closely with the business community in the implementation of the next step in Youth Guarantee Scheme.”
