Targeting workplace skills positive

Employers will welcome further targeting of the Training Opportunities Programme (TOPS), says BusinessNZ.

Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says more focus on the actual skills needed by employers should help more TOPS trainees gain work.

“The right kind of training is critical for getting unemployed people into jobs.

“What’s needed is more focus on skills that are relevant to local employers and industry.

“There is also a significant need for literacy, language and numeracy skills taught in a context of workplace needs.

“For many employers, the decision to hire is easier in cases where core foundation skills – literacy, numeracy, communication and work-readiness skills – are in place.”

Mr O’Reilly said it was positive that the Ministry for Social Development and Tertiary Education Commission were working together to ensure TOPS training effectively prepares trainees for success in the labour market.
