Construction qualification shows benefit of industry-school partnerships

The launch of youth construction qualifications shows how positive industry-school partnerships can be for young people and teachers, says Business NZ chief executive Phil O’Reilly.

The BConstructive programme, which was launched today by six Industry Training Organisations (ITOs) in the construction trades, will give young people chances to explore career options in a several dynamic industries, gain work-ready skills and have clear pathways into a range of apprenticeships.

Students in the BConstructive programme will also be able to earn industry-recognised qualifications and gain credits for their NCEA at the same time.

Phil O’Reilly described the programme as a model of industry-school partnership.

“BConstructive was developed by teachers and industry representatives and piloted in ten schools throughout the country.

“By working together, the two parties have been able to develop a programme that is educationally-robust, provides a strong grounding in literacy and numeracy, and gives young people the confidence and knowledge to enter the workforce.

“Feedback from students, teachers and headmasters in the pilot schools clearly shows it’s a winner.

“We commend the teachers and ITOs involved in this scheme and encourage other schools to get involved.”
