Pressure for trial periods in employment contracts won’t go away even if the Probation Bill is defeated, Business NZ says.
Today Business NZ presents its views to the select committee considering the Bill.
Chief Executive Phil O’Reilly says employers are fed up with spurious grievance claims helped along by process-heavy employment law.
“Many employers have been caught out by getting a procedural step wrong in a dismissal situation and have to either settle out of court or pay expensive legal proceedings.
“Unfortunately the complexity of the law encourages some employees to try it on, and this makes employers wary about taking on an untried worker.
“This situation is unfair to honest, law-abiding employers and employees, and makes it harder for unemployed people to gain employment.
“Employers have clearly signaled that they would like to have a sensible trial period like those in most other developed countries, and they will continue to seek this through the legislative process.”
